Shin Yubin (Korean Air) and Jeon Jeon-hee (Mirae Asset Securities) 메이저놀이터became the first Korean players in 30 years to reach the final of the women’s individual event at the World Table Tennis Championships.

The 12th-ranked duo of Shin Yubin and Jeon Ji-hee secured the silver medal with a 3-0 (11-7 11-9 11-6) victory over China’s world No. 1 pair of Sun Yingxia and Wang Manyu in the women’s doubles semifinals on day six of the 2023 ITTF World Table Tennis Championships in Durban, South Africa, on Saturday.

It is the first time in 30 years that a South Korean athlete has reached the women’s individual final at a World Championships since the 1993 Games in Gothenburg, Sweden, when Hyun Jeong-hwa won the women’s singles gold medal.

The pair of Shin Yoo-bin and Jeon Jeon-hee are one win away from crossing the Great Wall of China and giving Korean table tennis its first women’s individual gold medal in 30 years. They will face Wang Yidi and Chen Meng (CHN) at 1:30 a.m. KST on Aug. 28.

Shin Yoo-bin and Jeon Jeon-hee are the defending champions, and they pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament after playing aggressive attacking table tennis against the No. 1 and No. 2 singles players in the world, Sun Ying-sa and Wang Man-yu.

Sun Yingxia and Wang Manyu had no chance against the speedy forehand of Jeon and the relentless defense of Shin Yubin. From the round of 32 to today’s semifinals, the pair had won all four of their matches in straight sets.
